SongWriter Season 7: Maria Rezende and Pedro Mann on the Art of Forgiveness

SongWriter Season 7 continues with Maria Rezende and Pedro Mann

The acclaimed podcast SongWriter—a platform known for transforming poignant narratives into musical compositions with past guests like Questlove and David Gilmour—continues its seventh season by highlighting a lifelong creative partnership. This episode features Brazilian poet and film editor Maria Rezende alongside her longtime friend and collaborator, songwriter Pedro Mann. Their relationship, which spans decades, began in their teenage years when Mann first attempted to set one of Rezende’s father’s poems to music, only to discover the verses actually belonged to Maria herself.

The core of this episode revolves around a poem Rezende wrote concerning the complexities of forgiveness. Born from a personal moment of unreciprocated apology, the poem served as a “desperate measure” to bridge an emotional divide. Rezende reflects on the realization that acknowledging a mistake is not always a guarantee of reconciliation, a sentiment that resonates deeply within the artistic and psychological framework of the show.

Broadening the narrative, the episode incorporates the perspectives of scientists Dr. Rita de Cacia Oenning da Silva and Kurt Shaw. They interpret Rezende’s personal plea through the lens of Brazilian national identity, drawing parallels between individual forgiveness and the country’s historical struggle with reconciliation and justice following colonization. Shaw introduces the metaphor of Samba—the national dance of Brazil—as a representation of balance. He describes the “swing” of Samba as a state of syncopation where one almost falls but remains standing, inviting others into a shared space of movement and repair.

Inspired by these discussions on philosophy and movement, Pedro Mann shifted his focus toward a deeply personal subject: his late father. Despite a history marked by the cycles of violence and the challenges of bipolar disorder, Mann utilized the songwriting process to reconceptualize his relationship with his father. The resulting track serves as a vehicle for repair, proving that art can act as a bridge to the past, allowing for conversations that were never possible in life. This evolution of the podcast continues to build on the momentum seen in 2024 music circles, where narrative-driven songwriting has seen a significant resurgence.

Season seven of SongWriter is made possible by a grant from Templeton World Charity Foundation.
