Madonna has become the latest high-profile artist to voice strong opposition to the integration of artificial intelligence in the creative process, describing the technology as “the opposite of making art” during a recent interview with Vogue Italia. Reflecting on the evolution of the music industry, the pop legend lamented the loss of the collaborative, organic environments that once defined artistic development.
“Once you were around painters and musicians and dancers and artists in one place and working from a very pure place for each other,” Madonna explained. She noted that the current industry landscape has shifted away from this collaborative spirit, driven instead by metrics and digital trends. “Nowadays you don’t do that anymore. Now to have a record deal, you think about how many followers you have… Algorithms and artificial intelligence are the opposite of taking risks and to me that is the opposite of making art.”
This sentiment is echoed in her recent single, “Bring Your Love,” a collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter. In the track, Madonna critiques the industry’s obsession with “the charts, the streaming numbers,” singing, “don’t try to distract me with numbers / I did it all for love.”
Beyond the technical aspects of music production, Madonna expressed concern over how technology and social media have fostered isolation. “We struggle to come together… now we are isolated,” she observed. To combat this, she prioritizes periods of disconnection to fuel her own imagination. “I do like to take breaks… and disappear. Because that’s how you fuel your imagination. You have to have stillness and you have to have days where you’re just connecting to nature, my children, my horses.”
The singer further addressed these themes during a Q&A at the premiere of Confessions II – The Film, which accompanies her upcoming album. She criticized the modern, persistent need to document every moment, urging her audience to prioritize presence over digital consumption. “I came to this earth to be a doer, not a watcher… Put your fucking phones down and connect,” she stated. Confessions II – The Film premiered on YouTube on June 8, with the full album Confessions II scheduled for release on July 3 via Warner Records.
