The next in our series of interview is with The Innovation Studio founder and a rising name on the techno scene Maike Depas. We spoke with Maike about his brand new track “Berliner” which is available on all streaming platforms. Grab your copy here.
What can you tell us about your new single “Berliner”?
After the release of my first single track, “On The Spot”, which I can consider as a first approach to Melodic Techno, “Berliner” fully represents the inner theme that I wanted to share at this moment.
What was the story behind it and what was the idea?
Through “Berliner” I tried to express the love I feel for the city of Berlin, which allowed me to grow musically and as a person. Berliner is the representation of all the emotions and sensations that the city has given me; an explosive charge that is capable of infecting life of people and their thinking.
You mentioned the combination of freedom, the experimentation, all the innovation that this city of Berlin can express, so how has it influenced your sound?
Freedom, experimentation and innovation are the basis of my life as artist. The city of Berlin allowed me to discover new sounds, new musical genres and new approaches to the composition of electronic music. My sound was influenced by the contrast between the past and the contemporary, which is very present in the city of Berlin. Perfection and imperfection work together to stimulate the experimentation of dystopian sounds, deep and energetic which are completed with an engaging and dynamic groove.
You had also announced a special video, so what can we expect from it?
The idea is to “increase” the musical experience through a video so that the viewer can be involved into my representation of the city of Berlin by entering psychologically into my imagination. The audiovisual sync is present inside the video clip: a series of photographs that I took myself represent visually the rhythm and bring the listener on an exciting journey to Berlin at night together with a “dance” of abstract elements.
How are you satisfied with the feedback so far?
For an artist is always difficult to be a merchant, where numbers and figures are the only important feedbacks. But for me, the satisfaction was great not just because of numbers but because my music gave me the opportunity to interact with other people, musicians and listeners.
What can we expect to hear from you in the future?
The Extended Version of “Berliner” will be out shortly, including a new arrangement with new elements other than the original version; afterwards I will produce a new track where I will give space to words and voice too. Then, before the end of the year I will release my first album. After years of study and preparation, this experience is for me a first step in the “real” world where I can start to face reality while I keep studying and growing as a musician; it is a journey I am sharing with precious collaborators and with a, fortunately, ever-growing public of listeners to focus more and more on my musical ideas. This is just the beginning.
