Canadian hip-hop legend Kardinal Offishall recently sat down with Complex Canada to discuss his decision to launch a new concert series called, Free The City. The events are set to combine “philanthropy and entertainment” for free, safely from the comfort of your vehicle.
The first show takes place later today (June 30) in Toronto at CityView Drive-In, located at 20 Polson Street. The show will feature a variety of must-see performances from Dave Chappelle, Michael Che from SNL, and Donnell Rawlings, as well as Canadian talents Glenn Lewis, Karl Wolf, Shantel May, Michie Mee, Swagger Rite, Kardi himself, and many more.
Kardinal was inspired to launch the series after witnessing the hardships the pandemic has had on people’s mental health.
“I wanted to lift the spirits of the city and give us something to look forward to,” said Kardi.

While the show is free, fans can show additional support for the performres by donating to a GoFundMe page organized by Kardinal. The funds will be distributed equally amongst all performers at the event.
“We are giving back to the city, by providing free entertainment and helping with people’s mental health as they safely enjoy a DJ/concert event. After expenses, the money raised from sponsors is going back to the deejays and performers. It’s not a massive amount at all, but as a creative, it helps because many from our artist/DJ community haven’t seen a dime from shows or had a real opportunity to do what we love LIVE and in front of people. This is going to help them as well. Even if just a little bit.”
