When Funkin Matt and Elohim join forces in the studio, the result is a masterclass in collaboration. With their latest project, "AVA," finding a home on Oliver Heldens’ Heldeep Records, the duo recently discussed the unique creative synergy that defines their work and the specific inspirations behind their new single. The track serves as a testament to their ability to merge cinematic storytelling with hard-hitting electronic production.
For the artists, "AVA" was born from a desire to craft a narrative-driven experience. Drawing influence from the film Ex Machina, the pair sought to explore themes of artificial intelligence and captivity through a dark, atmospheric lens. They aimed to evoke a specific cinematic mood, blending monotone textures with the high-energy pulse of modern techno to mirror the story of an AI trapped by its creator.
Environment plays a significant role in their individual processes. Funkin Matt prefers the familiarity of his home studio in Oslo, where he can obsess over sound design without the distractions of an unfamiliar space. Conversely, Elohim finds inspiration in changing scenery, noting that she often writes while driving. Despite these different approaches, both prioritize comfort and consistency when it comes to tracking vocals and finalizing their sonic vision.
When asked about their working dynamic, Funkin Matt explained that their partnership began after Elohim reached out on Instagram, having been a fan of his track "JOI." Recognizing her potential to elevate his sound, he invited her to collaborate on a follow-up. Their creative flow is remarkably organic, characterized by a mutual lack of criticism and a shared commitment to their artistic vision. Elohim noted, "I LOVE that FM's so creatively channeled. He has such a clear and concise idea of what he wants musically and visually. For me, that is the most inspiring type of artist to work with and it is more rare than you would think. I'm greatful to have had the opportunity to work with such a brilliant mind."
Beyond their collaboration, both artists are looking toward the future. Funkin Matt continues to refine his production, favoring the depth of analog gear like his Moog Sub37 and ARP 2600, while preparing a slate of upcoming releases for labels like Musical Freedom and Hexagon. Elohim is currently focused on the rollout of her sophomore album, beginning with her new single, "Breath."
