The book makes it clear that it was written without the involvement of Aaliyah’s family. Despite that, it’s described as the “definitive biography” on the publisher’s website:

“The definitive biography of Aaliyah—the talented R&B singer and artist whose tragic death at only twenty-two years old shocked the entertainment world and solidified her as an unforgettable music legend, featuring new in-depth research and exclusive interviews.”

The book comes as a high profile sex crimes trial proceeds against R. Kelly, and his relationship with teenage Aaliyah has been brought up during testimony. On the same day this was discussed, her uncle released her hit album One in a Million to streaming services for the first time. As Inside reports:

“That same day, Aaliyah’s 1996 album One in a Million, which — along with most of her music — had been under her uncle’s control, appeared on streaming platforms for the first time. The release is part of a partnership between Hankerson’s Blackground Records and independent music company EMPIRE, Billboard reported earlier this month.” – Inside
