Watch Girl Tones’ Paste Session from Chicago

During our Lollapalooza weekend in Chicago, the crew from Paste Studio “On the Road” partnered with Lettuce Entertain You, Aspen Vodka, and Flecha Azul Tequila to capture a series of intimate performances across the city. On a sunny July evening, Girl Tones, the high-energy rock duo of sisters Kenzie and Laila, rolled into Salon 61 for one of our most enjoyable sessions yet.

We set up in a space aptly called The Library, an elegant and cozy room tucked inside the private event space of Salon 61. Warm, wood-paneled walls and coffered cherry ceilings gave the space a comfort that naturally amplified the sisters’ organic chemistry. Together, they turned a stripped-back setup into a dynamic, playful, and unapologetically punk rock display of tunes.

They opened with “Volcano,” a brand-new song bursting with rebellious energy and effortless charm courtesy of Kenzie’s sharp use of power chords on her guitar, mixed with Laila’s unique live drum-machine work. The duo created a sound that was well-suited to the setting we were in, and smiles filled the room before the tune was over.

Next came “Blame,” which Kenzie dedicated to “all the siblings out there.” It was a cleverly constructed tune discussing forgiveness and petty grudges that highlighted the sisters’ natural synchronicity. Watching them play together with such comfort and in such an effortless fashion was a gift, highlighting the rare magic that can come from a sibling musical relationship.

The relaxed audience, a mix of friends made throughout the weekend, crew, and collaborators, helped create an atmosphere that was such a pleasure to be a part of. Before, after, and between takes, laughter and banter flowed as easily as the vodka and tequila cocktails, which helped turn the session into a celebration of sorts.

Huge thanks to Lettuce Entertain You, Aspen Vodka, Flecha Azul Tequila, and the staff of Salon 61 for helping to make this session happen, and to Girl Tones for bringing their unique blend of rebellion and artistry to The Library. Keep your eyes peeled for more Paste Studio “On the Road” sessions!
