On December 6th, TRAИƧA: A Celebration came to New York City after a triumphant event at the Getty Center in Los Angeles in September. At the Powerhouse Arts space in Brooklyn last week, an ensemble of musicians took the stage to perform their songs from last year’s TRAИƧA benefit album. Asher White, Allison Russell, Bloomsday, Cassandra Jenkins, Cole Pulice, Kara Jackson, keiyaA, L’Rain, Lynn Avery, and more eaze were among the artists present, and organizers from the Red Hot non-profit stopped by to say a few words.
Last year, Paste ran a sprawling profile on the TRAИƧA compilation, speaking with White, Jackson, Perfume Genius, and L’Rain, along with project leaders and Red Hot founder John Carlin, about the music and initiative. In their write-up, editor Matt Mitchell wrote: “TRAИƧA is an album that centers trans voices while asking cis artists to step into the conversation, as well. It features claire rousay teaming up with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, Laura Jane Grace doing a song with Jayne County and Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo, and actress Hunter Schafer reading an Eileen Myles poem over Cole Pulice’s arrangements… Everyone on TRAИƧA is involved because they believe in the potency of trans voices. And the justice behind that is such a major, non-negotiable truth. These artists, all 100+ of them who took part in this compilation, aren’t just covering songs for a benefit—they’re making a piece of art that challenges people to reconsider the comforts that are outside of their own. TRAИƧA is going to be a beacon of hope for humanity at-large.”
Our good pal Emilio Herce was on the scene capturing the action. Check out our gallery from TRAИƧA: A Celebration below:
