Björk calls for Greenland to declare Independence as Trump threatens to takeover

As a possible U.S. takeover of Greenland looms, Björk is urging the country to declare independence. On Instagram and X, the musician referenced her native Iceland’s own bid for Independence from Denmark in 1944, claiming that Icelanders are “extremely relieved” to have broken free from the Danish and that she’s “burst[ing] with sympathy” for Greelanders “repeatedly.” Björk condemned Denmark’s inhumane treatment of Greenland women, specifically an alleged forced IUD campaign between 1966 and 1970, saying that “still today the danish are treating greenlanders like they are second class humans, removing children from their parents in 2025 !”

Trump’s interest in annexing Greenland from Denmark has reignited just days after the U.S. military raid on Venezuela, bombing of Caracas, and capture of President Nicolás Maduro, who is set to be arraigned on drug trafficking charges in the States. Trump plans to move major American oil companies into Venezuela and, potentially, Columbia. Denmark prime minister Mette Frederiksen has previously asked Trump to “stop the threats” against the Danish territory and has reiterated them again since the Venezuelan raids. In her Instagram post, Björk writes: “colonialism has repeatedly given me horror chills up my back, and the chance that my fellow greenlanders might go from one cruel coloniser to another is too brutal to even imagine.” Read her full statement below.
