Ann Clue: Navigating the Evolution of Techno and Finding Joy in the Journey

A Rising Force in Global Techno

Ann Clue has rapidly ascended the ranks of the electronic music scene, carving out a distinct aesthetic that blends raw energy with meticulous production. Her presence, both behind the decks and in the studio, has solidified her reputation as a formidable artist capable of commanding dancefloors across the globe. Over the past three years, her relentless touring schedule has taken her to 35 countries, where she has graced the stages of some of the most prestigious festivals in the industry.

As she prepares for her highly anticipated appearance at the iconic TimeWarp Festival in Mannheim, we sat down with Ann to discuss her creative process, her upcoming single ‘Joy’ set for a May release, and her perspective on the evolving landscape of modern techno.

Finding Balance and Inspiration

Reflecting on the start of 2023, Ann describes a period of intentional stillness. “My year has started quietly,” she explains. “I allowed myself a few months off; my body and my mind definitely needed it. I spent a lot of time with myself, but also gave my family some time together. I now feel ready to take off again!” This period of introspection has clearly fueled her creative output, leading to her upcoming release, ‘Joy,’ on the Fckng Serious label.

When asked about the inspiration behind the track, Ann emphasizes a philosophy of mindfulness and appreciation. “Life inspired me to my new release ‘Joy’. I found out that life itself is about joy. Celebrate your big and little wins. Grow every day. Get inspired. Nourish yourself. Go outside and spend time in nature. Take chances. Because life is just too short and fragile to not live a life of chasing joy!”

The Studio Workflow: Precision vs. Hardware

In an era where many producers are returning to analog hardware, Ann maintains a streamlined, software-centric approach in her home studio. “Pretty simple—Cubase 11, a MIDI keyboard, and lots of software on a MacBook in my living room,” she notes. While she acknowledges the allure of hardware, she prioritizes the efficiency and precision of digital tools.

“I do have a lot of hardware in my basement, but I barely use it. I love the quality of the sound, but software is so precise. Meanwhile, you can barely hear the difference between original and digital—the workflow with software is much faster for me.”

The TimeWarp Milestone

Performing at TimeWarp represents a significant milestone for the artist, particularly given its proximity to her home in Mannheim. “My touring life 2023 begins with TimeWarp. I can hardly wait! On one hand, it’s a ‘home run’ for me because I live in Mannheim and TimeWarp happens to be just around the corner from my house. On the other hand, I’m playing there for the first time, and it’s such a great honor to be part of it. It means I’m quite nervous but also excited. It will definitely be a big party.”

Authenticity and the Future

Addressing her role as a woman in the techno industry, Ann remains focused on substance over spectacle. She rejects the pressure to conform to external expectations, instead advocating for authenticity. “I never had a role model, but I look up to people who go and find their own way, no matter where they come from. Authenticity is one of the most amazing skills we can gather. Fight for right, go against the flow, and shake things up a little.”

Looking ahead, Ann is approaching her career with a renewed sense of purpose. “This will be probably the most exciting year of my life. I will tour much less than the previous years in order to make the best out of each event. To stay, to connect, to be in the moment.” With major appearances scheduled for Tomorrowland, Brooklyn Mirage, and EDC Las Vegas, it is clear that Ann Clue is poised to make a lasting impact on the global stage.
