Puberty 2, a definitive gem of 2010s indie rock and the arguable breakout record from Mitski, turns 10 years old next week. To celebrate this milestone, the musician is releasing a deluxe edition via her longtime record label, Dead Oceans. A limited run of “Forest Shadow” colored vinyl will be available on October 30, while a digital version of Puberty 2 (10th Anniversary Edition) is available on streaming platforms now.
The expanded release features two notable covers: One Direction’s “Fireproof” and Frank Sinatra’s “I’m a Fool to Want You.” These tracks originally appeared on the Our First 100 Days and Seven Inches for Planned Parenthood charity compilations, respectively, but have remained unavailable on streaming services until now. Additionally, Mitski has released new lyric videos for “Once More to See You,” “Your Best American Girl,” and “I Bet on Losing Dogs,” all translated into Spanish, Portuguese, and Filipino.
In 2016, we named Puberty 2 the 5th best album of the year. As Jaimie Cranford wrote at the time, “Mitski is a bonafide rock star, and her fourth studio album is an exceptional exploration of universal truths for a certain sect—unrequited love, financial instability and hungry ambition. Despite these coming of age tales, Puberty 2 is anything but ordinary. Mitski’s telling offers a refreshing and emotionally raw account of life in a way that avoids being precious.”
Mitski is currently touring her most recent album, Nothing’s About To Happen To Me.
