The history of electronic music holds a special place for this Madrileño artist who has played a crucial role in building the Spanish industry as we know it today. Since 1991, Cristian Varela has been at the heart of some of the most important episodes of this evolution, emerging as a true pioneer in the most diverse arts that make up the landscape of this profession today. He was one of the first electronic artists to produce live recordings, to perform using 4 turntables and to play at major events and festivals. He also set up schools and agencies for national and international artists and founded two record labels that have gone on to have a global impact since 1999: Black Codes Experiments and P0RN0GRAPH1C Recordings.
Welcome Cristian! Thanks very much for your time to talk to us here at Only Techno. How are you today?
All good thanks.
Where are you answering this interview from and what’s the situation like where you currently live?
Just back to London from Ultra MiaMi and now answering from Bournemouth where I live in UK. Here it’s a very calm place on the coast.
Are things beginning to open up again?
Sure! I’m UK from July 2021 and lot of countries now are back to “normality”
USA some restrictions also but all good.
How would you describe your particular brand of techno?
Underground, energetic, organic, deep and clever.
Let’s talk about some of your new projects, starting with your amazing new S.I.X concept. Can you tell us more about that?
6- SIX it’s very special for me because it is a new way of expression for me and my music.
I like my Live Shows VARELIVE with synthesizers and screens but I was thinking in another level.
The concept of 6- SIX is ti create music with turntables instead of machines, where I use each turntable as a different element of the creation. For example: Turntable1: only bases, Turbtable2: only percussion, Turntable3: only atmospheres….I was looking for a unique way to express myself and…I FOUND IT!
We really enjoyed your recent Beatport stream with Denon. Can we expect more of these in the future?
Yes of course. We are planing to prepare a special recording in some of the cities where my tours will happen.
In terms of new music, do you have anything coming up in the pipeline that you can share with us?
A lot! Every 2 weeks I am releasing great artists in my label Black Codes Experiments where I like so much to make remixes in each EPs because I love the idea of creating a different view of their creations and take the chance to push their careers.
How’s everything going with your label, Black Codes Experiments?
So great! Considering it is a very underground and experimental label we have a lot of followers and the events in UK and around the world are going really nice!
On the live side, are you planning some more touring soon that you can tell us about?
Yes we will focus on the 6 SIX Shows.
