The King of the Monsters Returns
We are currently living in a golden age of Godzilla. The iconic kaiju is not only starring in his own streaming series, Monarch: The Legacy Of Monsters, but he also remains a dominant force in two successful series of films across both Hollywood and Japan. Godzilla has firmly established himself as a true international movie star.
As fans eagerly await the next installment of the Warner Bros. Godzilla X Kong chronicles, Toho Studios is continuing its breakthrough Reiwa era with Godzilla Minus Zero. This film serves as the direct follow-up to Godzilla Minus One—widely considered one of the best entries in the modern franchise—and acts as a prequel to the off-beat satire Shin Godzilla. In a historic turn, Godzilla Minus Zero finally brings the King of the Monsters to the one city that has long eluded him: New York City. While Roland Emmerich’s previous attempt at a New York-based Godzilla film set a comically low bar, fans are expecting a much more formidable threat this time around.
A New Scale of Destruction
Directed by Minus One filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki, Minus Zero picks up two years after the events of the previous film. The narrative follows the survivors of the initial attacks, though specific plot details remain under wraps. Notably, the film is being shot for IMAX—a first for the Japanese Godzilla franchise—promising a cinematic experience that is as massive and loud as the monster himself.
Godzilla Minus One was a monumental success for Toho. Beyond its technical achievements, it was a poignant exploration of survivor’s guilt and PTSD in postwar Japan. It proved to be a box office juggernaut, grossing $116 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla film in history. It also made franchise history by winning an Academy Award, proving that a 70-year-old lizard still has plenty of life left in him.
Godzilla Minus Zero is scheduled to make landfall on November 3, 2026.
