An Asteroid Has Been Named After Elliott Smith

The late, iconic singer-songwriter Elliott Smith was already considered a star by his devoted fanbase, but he has now received official recognition from the International Astronomical Union. Following a successful proposal, a minor planet has been permanently named in his honor.

The initiative was spearheaded by Edinburg-based filmmaker Orlando Campopiano, who drew inspiration from Smith’s poignant track “Shooting Star.” Campopiano worked closely with the Elliott Smith Estate and the PAN-STARRS discovery team to secure the designation.

“With the full backing and approval of the Elliott Smith Estate and the PAN-STARRS discovery team, I recently spearheaded a formal proposal to the International Astronomical Union to have a minor planet permanently named in his honor. We just received official approval, and the designation is now live: Asteroid (861969) 2014 OS439 is officially “Elliottsmith.” Something very interesting about this is that, the catalogue number for the asteroid is 861969, directly mirroring his birth date of 8/6/1969!”

Campopiano expressed his hope that this celestial tribute will introduce new listeners to the profound and brilliant discography of the late artist. The asteroid, ELLIOTSMITH, can be viewed within its surrounding belt, serving as a permanent fixture in the night sky.
