Brighton, U.K. rockers Holiday Ghosts have signed to FatCat Records and announced their third album North Street Air, out on May 21. They’ve also shared its lead track “Mr. Herandi.” North Street Air follows their previous albums West Bay Playroom and their self-titled debut, both released via PNKSLM Recordings.
“Mr. Herandi” is a commentary on class inequality, and it’s aimed specifically at landlords. Holiday Ghosts critique the all-too-relatable issues of being a renter with lyrics like “2300 pounds each month just to sit around / I think about my landlord, why can’t he come and do his rounds? / He’s a filthy man.” The jolly song is marked by clean guitars and drums, and the video is equally charming, with its minimal DIY quality.
Guitarist Sam Stacpoole said of the track:
This song started out as a joke/folky country song I wrote almost on the spot. Just looping the chords and commenting on ways it felt like an unfair deal with our Landlord/ Tennant situation. The landlord is taking the stance of being completely oblivious to the standards of what he’s paid large sums monthly for whilst living abroad. All the lines are directly factual to the situation we were in at that point and his name really is Mr Herandi. We also recorded it in his house which was directly above his letting agents.
Drummer Katja Rackin also added that their new album draws inspiration from the hustle and bustle of living in the middle of coastal Brighton:
North Street is the busiest and most polluted feeling street in Brighton, and for 6 months that’s where we lived. Having the city center at your doorstep provides so many bizarre experiences and scenarios, so many weird and interesting people, continuous noise, and crowds.
