It wouldn’t be a season of A.V. Undercover without an appearance from GWAR, especially when the lineup consists of returning acts, including OK Go, Rhett Miller, and The Wood Brothers. The only real question was which song the intergalactic rockers (by way of Richmond, Virginia) would choose from our list. GWAR’s shown an impressive knack for reimaginings, having already offered indelible takes on Kansas’ classic rock staple, Cyndi Lauper’s ode to masturbation, and an Oscar nominee, to cite just a few of their “dismantlings.” But when the band came a-knocking at Chelsea Studios NYC late last year, it was to join the ranks of Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club,” and transform “the song’s glitter-drenched celebration of identity and self-expression into a full-scale alien-metal spectacle.” Mission accomplished:

In a press release, The Berzerker Blöthar said of the choice, “‘Pink Pony Club’ is about embracing exile from a boring, shitty world and remaking yourself into whatever you want—be who you are, be who you aren’t, piss people off, we don’t care!” GWAR also noted their shared history with The A.V. Club, which includes appearing on Undercover more than any other artist and, at one point, giving away an autographed penis (drawn on a piece of drywall).
We’re keeping an ear out for what Roan thinks of the cover, and also extending an early invitation to our fellow Midwesterner to join us for A.V. Undercover season 11. If another GWAR song makes the song list, she’ll have an opportunity for her own rejoinder.
GWAR will kick off The Gor Gor Strikes Back Tour this spring, starting in Richmond, VA (naturally). You can check out upcoming dates here.
