10 great SXSW performances

Our founder Josh Jackson said it best three years ago, “I’ll take discovering my new favorite band in a tiny rock club over watching the latest superstars on a screen behind a giant stage with 80,000 other people.” And, for over 20 years, Paste’s day parties have remained a fixture in the South by Southwest festival ecosystem, taking control of stages at venues like Stage on Sixth, the Pershing, and High Noon. We’ve been lucky enough to break bands and celebrate established ones, be it The 1975, Of Monsters and Men, The Zombies, or Built to Spill. And, if we were extra lucky, we caught those bands on tape. The best part about SXSW is its unpredictability. Sometimes, alt figures like Daniel Johnston or J Mascis stop by and play a set for your magazine. With the festival’s 40th year of programming kicking off later this week, we’re taking a walk down memory lane, revisiting some of our very favorite performances. Check them out below, and we’ll see you on March 14-17 for The Best Paste Party Ever, which you can RSVP for here.
