The Mamas and the Papas—the famed folk-rock group who helped to solidify the lush Laurel Canyon sound—only lasted a few years. They were major figures in the 1960s counterculture movement, but they were really only together from around 1965 to 1969, during which time they released well-known hits like “California Dreamin’” and “Monday, Monday.” The original band made up of John Phillips, Denny Doherty, Cass Elliot and Michelle Phillips ultimately broke up before the 1970s began.
However, a slightly modified version of the band re-emerged years later. Helmed by Phillips and Doherty, they were often called The New Mamas and the Papas, but mostly recorded and performed under their original name. On this day (April 2) in 1982, that group took to the stage in Boulder, Colo., for a peaceful set featuring their aforementioned classics, plus some of their other popular tunes like “Straight Shooter” and “Creeque Alley.”
